Disease Control Update 2010
• BASF and AgraQuest Inc. have entered into a license, supply, and distribution agreement for AgraQuest’s biofungicide, Serenade (QST 7 3 strain of dried Bacillus subtilis)The agreement gives BASF rights to Serenade for foliar and drench applications in agricultural crops in many countries throughout Europe, Africa, Middle East, Asia, and Latin America.
• BioSafe Systems’ SaniDate 5.0 (hydrogen peroxide) sanitizer/disinfectant postharvest chemistry has been approved for the treatment of fruit and vegetable processing waters and other postharvest applications, and the disinfection of greenhouse equipment.
• RootShield WP (Trichoderma harzianum, strain T-22) from BioWorks has been approved by the Department of Pesticide Regulation for sale in California. RootShield WP is an improved formulation of their currently registered biological fungicide, PlantShield HC.
• Procure 480SC (triflumizole) from Chemtura is a broad-spectrum foliar fungicide and is approved for use on a variety of fruit and vegetable crops including strawberries and cucurbits. This fungicide can control powdery mildew, scab, leaf spot, and black spot.
• In August 2009, EPA granted federal registration for use on 28 additional fruit and vegetable crops. State registration in California is pending.
• Quintec (quinoxyfen) fungicide from Dow AgroSciences received national supplemental labeling to control powdery mildew in artichoke, winter squash, gourds, pumpkins, and stone fruits.
• In 2009, the label for Ranman (cyazofamid) from FMC Corp. expanded for use in California on cucurbits, tomato, and potato not produced in greenhouses. Additionally, it is now approved for supplemental use on carrots in California. Ranman is also labeled for use on fruiting vegetables and carrots east of the Rocky Mountains and on greenhouse tomatoes (tomato transplants) outside of California. The product controls diseases including late blight, pink rot, phytophthora blight, root rot, downy mildew, and others.
• Gowan Company, LLC has launched MonCoat MZ fungicide under a marketing agreement with Nichino America, Inc. MonCoat MZ contains the active ingredients flutolanil and mancozeb. Gowan will market this fungicide in the major potato growing areas of the U.S. It offers effective suppression of several key diseases in potatoes including Rhizoctonia (black scurf), Fusarium dry rot, and silver scurf.
• Badge X2 (copper oxychloride) is now registered in Florida and California, with other states pending. From Isagro USA, the product is a copper-based fungicide designed to help control a wide variety of fungal diseases. It is certified by USDA for organic production.
• Regalia (active ingredient) from Marrone Bio Innovations activates a plant’s immune system to protect against a variety of fungal and bacterial diseases. The product features an expanded label with additional crops and uses, a re-entry interval of four hours, a pre-harvest interval of zero days, and improved physical characteristics for easier mixing and spraying. Regalia is compliant with the National Organic Program, and is OMRI listed.
• Valent U.S.A. Corporation received California state registration for Presidio (fluopicolide) fungicide in brassica (head and stem), bulb and root vegetable crops (except carrots, potatoes and sugar beets), in addition to leafy vegetables, cucurbits, fruiting vegetables and grapes. The fungicide is currently registered on these crops in most states; New York registration is pending.
