The Midwest is nurturing the next generation of operations, American Vegetable Grower magazine’s 2017 State of the Industry survey shows. It has more young businesses, percentage wise, than other regions: 39% of responding businesses are less than 10 years old. No other region reported more than 25% of operations that young. This was also the No. 1 answer given by this region. That category never got higher than No. 3 in other regions.
The Midwest is also the least likely in the country to be concerned about government regulations. For the rest of the regions, that was the No. 1 pick among a list of 11 concerns growers could choose from. It was No. 4 for the Midwest, with only 39% saying regulations concerned them.
