Washington Tree Fruit Honors

A divergent cast was honored at the Washinton State Horticultural Association’s 108th  annual meeting in Yakima. Jeff Cleveringa, who heads up R&D for Oneonta Starr Ranch Growers, took the gavel as 2013 president of the association from David Douglas at the annual banquet, where several awards were handed out. Winners included:

Silver Apple – George Allan, a partner at the fruit growing and packing operation Allan Brothers in Naches, WA, received the Silver Apple Award. Allan has served as president of the Hort Association and chair of the Washington Apple Commission, and was American/Western Fruit Grower’s “Apple Grower of the Year” in 1998 with his brother Dave.

Silver Pear – Linda Bailey, vice president of operations for the Pear Bureau Northwest, received the Silver Pear Award.

Women’s Leadership Award for Service – Jennifer Witherbee, executive director of the Washington Apple Education Foundation.

Women’s Leadership Award for Science – Dr. Ute Chambers, Washington State University Decision Aid System Manager and Educator.

Latino Leadership Award: Leo Garcia, lead faculty with Wenatchee Valley College’s tree fruit production and viticulture programs, received the Latino Leadership Award. Garcia heads the college’s Hispanic Orchard Employee Education Program, in which, Extension agent and presenter Karen Lewis noted, Garcia has guided 1,300 students.
