Veteran orchard managers are familiar with the weed complexes they will most likely face each production season. One species they usually prepare for are those in the Conyza species.
“While it’s not the only weed species that germinates across orchard floors each season, hairy fleabane and horseweed can be especially problematic,” said Daniel Abruzzini, technical field agronomist, Corteva Agriscience. “Now orchard managers can add a herbicide to their weed control program that’s new to California tree crops and offers excellent activity on tough Conyza broadleaf weeds.”

Optimizing tree health, production efficiency
Weed control should always be a priority to eliminate competition for nutrients. This is especially true during the establishment of young trees when root systems are delivering nutrients needed for vigorous growth and to increase trunk diameter.
“Soil nutrients play a pivotal role in the health of young trees, especially during their early growth stages,” Abruzzini said. “The sooner young trees become established, the more likely they may begin producing fruit, so tree health is a foundational precursor to a tree’s future yield potential.”
Effective control of broadleaf weeds and grasses contribute to:
- Increased irrigation efficiency by allowing more water to reach root zone
- More-efficient fertilizer applications
- Less habitat for rodents and/or insects
- Easier pruning and other cultural practices
- Increased harvest efficiency
Having weed-free orchard floors allows irrigation water to reach the root zone of high-value tree nuts like pistachios.
