Call To Action On Farm Bill

U.S. Capitol building

Several industry organizations, including the Georgia Fruit and Vegetable Growers Association (GFVGA) and the United Fresh Produce Association, have been keeping tabs on development of the 2012 Farm Bill. Recently, GFVGA released a report of the progress made so far, as well as a call to action for growers who want to make sure their top priorities are addressed.

“On Friday, April 20, the Senate Agriculture Committee released legislative language for the 2012 Farm Bill. After an initial review of the language, much of the GFVGA supported Specialty Crop Farm Bill Alliance recommendations have been included in this initial proposal. Committee review and debate will begin on Wednesday, April 25 at 9 a.m.”

Specific highlights included in the GFVGA report are Block Grant funding. Pest and Disease Research, Specialty Crop Research Initiative projects, and trade and nutrition programs.

The GFVGA report can be found by clicking here. It also includes a sample letter growers can send to their elected Senators on Capitol Hill. (While the letter was written for Georgia producers, it can be modified to fit any grower regardless of location.)

United Fresh has set up a similar program for its members. By clicking here, you can learn about the background and current status of the 2012 Farm Bill, and contact members of the Senate Agriculture Committee.
