Ag Group: More Farmland Needed Now

According to Jon Scholl, president of conservation organization American Farmland Trust (AFT), not enough fresh fruits and vegetables are produced in the U.S. for everyone to eat a balanced and nutritious diet. “In fact, it is estimated that we need at least another 13 million acres of farmland growing fruits and vegetables just for Americans to meet the minimum daily requirement of fruits and vegetables set by USDA 2005 dietary guidelines," he says.

"This statistic is even more poignant with the release of the USDA’s new ‘Report of the Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee on the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, 2010,’ which calls for Americans to include even more fruits and vegetables into their diet. With the majority of these fruits and vegetables grown in the path of development, and the need for 13 million more acres, we must ask, how can we afford to lose another acre of farmland and still expect to improve the health of our nation?”

Scholl notes there are several things consumers can do to help make sure there is better access for all Americans to fresh, healthy foods, and to help save the farms and farmland that are critical to supplying that bounty:

  • Support your local farmers markets, CSA’s and other direct-farm outlets.
  • Get involved in your local land trust or conservation organization to help protect our working farm and ranchland; or your local planning organization to help plan for the future for agriculture in your community.
  • Cast your vote for the markets you love in AFT’s America’s Favorite Farmers Markets contest.

Who is going to harvest an extra 13 million acres in the US? In general I don’t believe the US consumer is willing to pay for the high standard of fresh fruit and vegetables that American farmers produce. Instead $$ are the primary decison factor in buying from south of the boarder, and we all know what kind of quality control they have on fresh fruits & vegetables.

I do not trust anything AFT says. They are backers of Cap and Trade. This is not an organization who has the farmers interest in mind. Someone please take a look into the organizations personnel. They are linked with some big govt organizations. So I gues they are saying they want to start govt farms to try to meet the demand for more fruit and veg for Americans.

This nothing more than an outright lie, we already over produce every year to the delight of corprate greed mongers and cheap food policy Gov. idiots. Farmers are already under paid for the product we provide, over charged for the products we need to produce the cheap food that most people consume. Wake up America your cheap food policy is undermining your most important asset, the family farmer!

Sounds GREAT where can I get free money to clear my 100 plus acres into production?

Good, we need more farmland and people to harvest. As the big cities die (Detroit for example), convert to farmland. Stop illegal immigration, take Americans that are on unemployment and put them in the fields.

Using Americans in the fields is a Joke! They won’t DO the work that the immigrants will. I agree we need to stop illegals. We also need to support the farms..remember NO FARMS- NO FOOD.
I have not found any bargains in produce from other countries, but I do not buy it any way. I always look for country of origin, and buy only food, whether fresh, canned or frozen, that is produced in the U.S!
