During the 2012 Florida Citrus Show, Dr. Kristian Moeller provided an update on GlobalG.A.P. adoption around the world. Moeller is the managing director of the good practices and certification program. He says more and more countries are adopting the approach with more than 100 involved thus far.

The challenge of globalizing markets is nowhere greater than in the primary food sector. GlobalG.A.P. (formerly known as EUREPG.A.P.) was established as a key reference for Good Agricultural Practices (GAPs) in the global marketplace, by translating consumer requirements into agricultural production in a rapidly growing list of countries.

GlobalG.A.P. is a private sector body that sets voluntary standards for the certification of agricultural products around the globe. The aim is to establish one standard for GAPs with different product applications capable of fitting to the whole of global agriculture.

The program is a pre-farmgate standard, which means that the certificate covers the process of the certified product from farm inputs like feed or seedlings and all the farming activities until the product leaves the farm.
For fresh citrus growers particularly, this certification is growing in importance because more buyers are asking for its seal of approval.
