Monica Libbey, a fifth-generation orchardist from Manson, WA, about an hour north of Wenatchee, won the painting “Stand By Me Reds” by Jan Cook Mack at the Washington State Horticultural Association’s 110th annual meeting in December.

Each year American and Western Fruit Grower gives a print of one of Mack’s paintings to all those attending the annual banquet, but this was the first year we gave away the original artwork. Libbey was an appropriate winner, as the 31-year-old recently quit her job as a city planner to eventually take over the family business of growing apples, pears, and cherries from her parents, Rocky and Christy Libbey.

“And I’m a fan of Jan Cook Mack,” she said. “It’s already on the wall.”
