Timely Tasks To Do During Down Times Of Apple Harvest

Apple harvest is a busy time, says Amy Irish-Brown, educator with Michigan State University Extension. However, if growers find themselves with time between pickings, she offers suggestions of orchard tasks that would be prudent to fill the time void.

Here’s some suggestions for filling the gaps in harvest:

  • Catch up on tree training
  • Fall pruning of larger processing blocks
  • Irrigation system repairs
  • Ditch and fence row cleanup
  • Repairs
  • Fall weed control

“Before you assign jobs, go back to your H-2A contract and make sure you listed that task on the contract. You cannot ask H-2A workers to do tasks outside of what the contract states,” Irish-Brown writes. “Make a list of possible tasks to be included in a future H-2A contract – when you fill out the paperwork in February, these minor jobs don’t always come to mind, so take some notes now.”
