Florida Senate Passes Tomato Safety Bill

The state Senate has passed a bill designed to ensure the safety of Florida-grown tomatoes following a false salmonella scare nearly two years ago.

The measure, passed on Tuesday, would set minimum safety standards and authorize the Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services to inspect farms, greenhouses, and packing facilities.

In 2008, a federal investigation of a salmonella outbreak initially focused on tomatoes. Turns out, not a single Florida tomato was found to be contaminated. Eventually, officials blamed Mexican jalapeno peppers.

The bill passed 35-1 and now goes to the House where a similar measure (HB 69) awaits floor action.

The state senate needs to go to???? Mexico.
What does HB 69 have to do with salmonella in Mexico.

Not a good bill, Gov. should leave Ag. alone, it can regulate itself. In all the cases I have read the outbreaks have not been caused by the Plant taken up the bacteria, but by irrigation with contaminated water were it sticks to the plant tissue.

Definately not a viable bill. Needs to be observed and regulated by the growers, not government.

Just like the Government.. Regulate the US Grower’s right out of business when it’s the imports from Mexico that caused the issues in the first place, and on top of that it wasn’t even in tomatoes!
How about regulating the imports by the same standers the US Grower has to abide by.
Marxism is close than you think….

RSI Growers are correct. Marxisim is alive and well in the state house in FL. The collectivists are not only in DC now, they are here in the state!!!!
Everyone who reads this should call their house reps ASAP and voice their opinion to stop this invasion of your businesses. If this is made law what is next? Control of what and how much you can grow???? Entering your private property any time they want without any reason?????? Make you buy health insurance??????

some of us still remember the temik contaminated melons from California. Symptoms included seizures, loss of consciousness, cardiac arrythmia, hypotension, dehydration, and anaphylaxis. Seventeen persons were hospitalized. Six deaths and two stillbirths following acute illnesses associated with watermelon ingestion were reported.

Evidently the industry did not regulate itself very well in this case.
