Immokalee, FL-based tomato grower Lipman has unveiled it newest round variety tomato: Crimson Queen.

With increased flavor and a bright red interior, Crimson Queen tomatoes are the latest breed to emerge from Lipman’s research and development team, led by Mark Barineau, Ph.D., director of seed development and R&D.

“We know that round tomatoes typically have a reputation for durability, rather than taste – and that increased flavor is normally associated with higher-sugar-content varieties like grape, cherry, and heirloom-type tomatoes,” said Barineau. “However, with the Crimson Queen, we’re changing that, by introducing a round tomato that doesn’t sacrifice flavor for function.”

In addition to the benefit of high flavor and increased Brix, Crimson Queen tomatoes also have higher lycopene levels – thanks to the crimson gene. This breed also has the same characteristics that make round varieties popular with foodservice operators and consumers: shape, durable skin, and long shelf life.

“Our growing process begins before the seeds are even planted – with research,” said Darren Micelle, chief operating officer for Lipman. “It’s because of our R&D team that we’re able to take feedback from our customers, and develop a product that meets their needs.”

Additional information about Crimson Queen tomatoes will be available at the Produce Marketing Association’s 2013 Fresh Summit Convention and Expo in New Orleans Oct. 18-20.

I know our customers are going to want to know if this was achieved by breeding or through gene manipulation. There is still a lot of fear of GMO foods out there, especially among the gardeners.

Far as I know Lipman doesn't sell seed, only finished product. Don't see why gardeners need worry about that.

This is just an ad for Lipman. If seed is not available, I don't know why this was even posted to growing produce as Lipman is going to be the only one growing it.

Went to check out this tomato. I picked up some at walmart in Hendersonville,TN . For the ones I picked up, only thing I thing I can say is that it is round. Hard as a baseball, had no flavor! you need to go bask to the drawing board, sorry. I will pay top dollar the best and I love tomatoes.

Picked some at Trader Joes and they look like filled with gel or some substance. Taste awful. Very artificial. And that gel really worries me. Does anyone have same experience?
