Florida Department Of Citrus Searches For Funding

While the Florida citrus industry battles for survival against a fatal bacterial disease, the state Citrus Department is embroiled in its own survival battle – the battle of the bucks.

The basic question is where will the department get enough money to continue operating and, what happens if it ceases to exist?

“That would be the biggest mistake the industry ever made,” Ben Hill Griffin III, one of the state’s 10 largest growers and a former citrus commissioner, told The Ledger newspaper. He believes that if the department dies, the federal government could step in and make decisions for Florida growers.
