Reaching a century in any capacity is reason to celebrate. This year marks 100 years since the first Miss Florida Citrus (known as Florida Citrus Queen back then) was chosen. As part of the program’s 100th Anniversary Centennial Celebration last month in Winter Haven, the newest honoree was crowned. Say hello to Alana Scheuerer, Miss Florida Citrus 2024.

Scheuerer of Coral Springs prevailed among competitors partaking in the Miss America preliminary pageant. For winning the this year’s title, Scheuerer took home an official Miss America Gold Centennial crown, received a $1,000 scholarship, earned an automatic entry into the Miss Florida Pageant in Lakeland this June, and more.

Scheuerer is a two-time Florida State University graduate with a degree in hospitality management and tourism and a Masters in American dance studies. To get to know her better, I asked Scheuerer a few questions. Check out the Q&A to see what she had to say.

What inspired you to compete in the Miss Florida Citrus Pageant?

Scheuerer: I first competed in the Miss Florida Organization for scholarships to afford school five years ago. At the time, Miss Florida Citrus was Michaela McLean who then won the title of Miss Florida. Ever since, I fell in love with the program and knew the honor of the Citrus title because you’re not just representing one city or county, but an entire industry so vital to our state.

What are you most looking forward to learning and doing during your reign?

Scheuerer: I don’t come from a family of growers and packers, but wow has it felt like I’ve been welcomed into the citrus “family” with open arms. From expos, conferences, grove visits, and packinghouse tours, I can’t wait to learn, experience, and promote it all!

Talk more about your pageant platform and why you chose it.

Scheuerer: My social initiative is TAP: Turn up Artistic Participation. As a tap dancer for more than 25 years, I can attest the art form has taught me much more than just dance moves. While I was fortunate to directly benefit from the social, emotional, and mental benefits that the arts have, not everyone is actively engaged and knowledgeable of available resources. My goal is to get everyone involved.

Tell us something about yourself that others might not know.

Scheuerer: I work full time in the behavioral health field for the International Association of Fire Fighters Center of Excellence. Through Advanced Recovery Systems, I have the privilege of flying around the country giving presentations to fire fighters, specifically for substance and mental health resources!
