Medflies On The Move

According to reports from the Florida Department of Agricultural and Consumer Services (FDACS), a Mediterranean fruit fly was discovered in the 100 block of Andrews Avenue in Delray Beach.

The new discovery adds on to the initial confirmed findings earlier this month in Boca Raton, which was the largest Florida outbreak of Medfly in more than a decade. In an effort to eradicate the pest, sterile medflies were released last week near the infection quarantine zone along Federal Highway.

FDACS officials say treatment and trapping areas will be expanded to accommodate the new find.
In addition, state ag officials also will be setting traps on public and private property in south Delray Beach.
