Too Much Rain In New York May Impact Harvest
The record April rainfall this year in Ithaca, NY, was more than double the 3.29-inch 30-year average, according to the Northeast Regional Climate Center, and has resulted in wet soils impassible for farm equipment, according to an article on Cornell’s Chronicle Online.
Crop production experts are expecting planting delays and stressed crops. As it takes a week for the soil to dry out, May weather may be crucial for some crops.
There is concern, according to the article, that growers of cool-season crops such as broccoli or spinach that typically plant early to avoid summer heat, may have delayed harvest.
