Smaller Apple Crop Expected In Washington

An early apple harvest is expected in Washington state this year as warm summer temperatures and an early start to spring helped speed the season up.

Apple grower, Charlie de La Chapelle, tells KIMA-TV in Yakima, WA, he expects harvest will be 10 days early and with this early season and water challenges, growers may see smaller-sized apples. La Chappelle says sunburn has greatly affected the Washington apple crop with temperatures exceeding 100°F extending for several weeks.

“We’re expecting a harvest that will be shorter. We won’t have as many apples as we did last year, but we should still have somewhere between 125-135 million cartons, which is still a lot of apples,” Rebecca Lyons, export marketing director for the Washington Apple Commission, told KIMA-TV.
