Combo Pheremone Control For Fruit Growers

Combo Control

Pherocon CM-DA Combo, Trece’s monitoring system for female and male codling moth (CM), has outperformed marketing expectations, according to Donna Lingren, Trece’s marketing manager. So much so that it is quickly replacing “pheromone only” in both mating disruption and conventionally treated orchards.

Lingren attributes Pherocon CM-DA Combo’s success to it providing a more consistent and accurate monitoring picture of population emergence in mating disruption-treated orchards, compared to pheromones alone. It also performs better in conventionally treated orchards located near codling moth mating disruption treatments and is as good as, or better, than pheromones alone in conventionally treated orchards.

The DA Kairomone-based technology has the advantage of capturing both female and male codling moths. The Combo lure is male dominant and DA alone is female dominant in the gender captured. Correspondingly, the DA lure is particularly helpful in pinpointing female biofix for more accurate degree day models. DA was discovered by Douglas Light of USDA’s Agricultural Research Service in Albany, CA, and co-invented and patented with Clive Henrick of Trece.

DA is also under development as an adjuvant for adult or larval control. Both solid and liquid formulations are in advanced trials. Uniquely, the microencapsulated liquid formulation enhances pheromone for adult mating disruption and various insecticides for larval control. Trece plans to introduce several new products based on DA under the Cidetrak brand following EPA registration.
