Sen. Kristen Gillibrand (D-N.Y.) took to Capital Hill last week to encourage President Obama to support a congressional push to save money by eliminating double inspections of bulk shipments of apples to Canada. Currently under the Export Apple Act, apples exported to Canada from the U.S. are inspected twice before shipment. Gillibrand said that inspecting apples once would save roughly $300 per shipment,

“The double inspection of our apples to Canada is an impediment to New York apple exporters,” Gillibrand said. “The elimination of the expensive and unnecessary second inspection would put money back in our local growers’ pockets.”

Rep. Bill Owens (D-N.Y.) recently introduced H.R. 1298, which would allow the export of apples in bulk bins to Canada without USDA certification. Gillibrand indicated she would introduce a similar measure in the Senate.
