Mississippi State University Hosts Blueberry Workshop

Mississippi State University will offer an educational workshop, co-hosted by the Gulf South Blueberry Growers, for growers on Feb. 13. The workshop will be held from 1-5 p.m. at the Forrest County Extension Office in Hattiesburg, MS.

John Adamczyk will offer an update on the blueberry research program at the Thad Cochran Southern Horticultural Laboratory in Poplarville, MS. Eric Stafne will discuss potential micro-nutrient deficiencies in blueberries. Blair Samson will update growers on identification, trapping, and monitoring of spotted wing drosophila in Mississippi. Juan Silva, Frank Matta, and Amanda Pegg will discuss post-harvest handling and characteristics of blueberries. Barakat Mahmoud will discuss the proposed produce safety rule of the Food Safety Modernization Act. Fumiomi Takeda from USDA’s Agricultural Research Service in Kearneysville, WV, will discuss horticultural and engineering research to improve machine harvest efficiency.
