Spader Improves Soil Structure

Anyone who was fortunate enough to attend the Italian Equipment Manufacturers Association International Exposition in Bologna, Italy, late last year got a glimpse of a device that’s become quite a handy tool for fruit and vegetable growers. It’s the Serie 205 Spader, manufactured by Tortella and marketed and distributed domestically by Brewt Power Systems of Merced, CA.

Currently, vineyards are probably the biggest market for the Tortella Spader, thanks to its ability to improve soil cultivation, says Butch Rhoton of Brewt Power Systems. However, it is also becoming quite popular among almond and vegetable growers, in particular those who farm organically. “The spader’s deep tillage helps to improve soil structure and incorporate a mix of good soil,” says Rhoton. For example, the spader can work soil amendments and green manure deep into the soil structure.

Depending on the model, there are anywhere from four to 10 spades per unit. Each spade is constructed to lessen soil compaction and fracture hardpan soils, improving soil drainage and allowing deep water penetration. In addition, the spader helps preserve soil tilth. It is designed to leave small clumps of soil, maintaining the integrity of the land.

It’s not just growers who are realizing the benefits the spader has to offer (although Rhoton points out that one custom farmer in California owns 24 of the machines). John Inman, a professional engineer and farm adviser emeritus with Monterey County Agricultural Extension in Salinas, CA, says the spader can perform the work of seven crew members. Michigan State University is also looking into purchasing one of the models for testing and evaluation in its field trials.
