The Washington State Fruit Commission has announced the passing of its longtime leader B.J. Thurlby. He was 60. Thurlby had been battling cancer and passed away Jan. 10 following a medical procedure for his illness.
Thurlby enjoyed a fruitful career in the agriculture industry that spanned three decades. His passion was deeply rooted in cherries and helping promote the cherry industry in the Pacific Northwest. He was a true champion for cherries. Thurlby contributed his thoughts to an article we published in the wake of the historic heat wave that scorched the Pacific Northwest in 2021.
Thurlby proudly led the Washington State Fruit Commission as President for 25 years. He recently retired from the post on Dec. 31, 2025.
Thurlby is survived by his wife of 33 years, Maggie.
