Wisconsin’s Apple Crop Was Down Significantly In 2012

Wisconsin apple growers did not have a stellar year in 2012. According to USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service Wisconsin 2012 Fruit Summary, there were numerous reports that trees were not producing fruit last year, and total apple production was the lowest in the state since 1945.

According to the report, the total for the state was 23.6 million pounds, with 21.4 million pounds of utilized production.

Production and utilization were down 54 % and 44.7%, respectively, from 2011. In addition, yields decreased 6,120 pounds per acre to 7,380. 

Total U.S. production decreased 4% to 9.1 billion pounds.
