Year Of The Apple Art Contest Grand Prize Winner Named

Young-eon Kim, age 16, of Tacoma, WA, was recently named the Washington Apple Education Foundation (WAEF) Grand Prize winner in the 18th Annual Year of the Apple Art Contest presented by Dow AgroSciences. As the Grand Prize winner, Young-eon received $750 cash for her award-winning artwork titled, “Apples Under the Balcony at Sunset.” In addition to the cash prize, Young-eon’s artwork will be published on the 2014 Dow AgroSciences wall calendar.
 
In total, seven Washington state students received a share of the $1,650 in prize money recognizing their artistic talents. The winning students’ schools will also be acknowledged for their support of the arts and the Year of the Apple art contest.

The Year of the Apple selection committee chose the gifted winners amongst many entries submitted by K-12 students from across the state. Artists competed in three grade divisions: Kindergarten through fourth grade, fifth through eighth grade and ninth through twelfth grade.

Year of the Apple Honorable Mention cash awards in the amount of $150 each were presented to Michael Petriyenko, age 9, from Ferndale and Annette Lee, age 10, from Mill Creek in Division One; Division Two winners were Mariana Petriyenko, age 13, from Ferndale, WA, and Jaimie Ding, age 13, from Camas, WA; and Division Three winners were Michelle Sun, age 15, from Bellevue, WA, and Michelle Jeon, age 15, from Issaquah, WA.

The winning entries can be viewed at www.waef.org. Promotion for the 2014 Year of the Apple art contest begins next month. The deadline for students to submit entries will be June 1, 2014, for the 2014 Year of the Apple art contest. The Year of the Apple art contest is open to all Washington state students, grades K-12.
