Meister Media’s CEAg World has just released its latest  Industry Report: Greenhouse Production Guide. The report includes detailed troubleshooting and advice around crop yields, growing media, structure maintenance, labor bottlenecks, irrigation best practices, and more.

CEA growers have an incredible array of tools, technologies, and production options at their disposal, and they’re getting more and more sophisticated every day. But more options don’t necessarily make for easier decisions. In fact, they can make it harder to decide where to focus your attention, not to mention your precious CapEx.

Consider a crop that’s not performing up to expectations. Is it an irrigation issue? Temperature? Airflow? Or something less obvious? It’s tempting to make adjustments based on the most likely culprit, but even a seemingly straightforward fix can create new problems if the underlying cause hasn’t been identified. The better approach may be to examine the evidence before changing anything.

Or take growing media. With an expanding range of raw materials and formulations available, “which substrate performs best?” doesn’t really go far enough. You have to suss out which combination of materials will deliver the best consistency, performance, and economics for your particular crop and production system.

In other words, you have to ask yourself (and your team, and your suppliers) lots of questions. And they need to be specific.

That’s a common thread running through our Greenhouse Production Guide. Whether the subject is greenhouse maintenance, labor efficiency, growing media, crop performance, or water management, the articles in this issue encourage growers to look beyond the obvious, evaluate your options, and make informed decisions based on the needs of your own operation.
