Survey: Organic Produce Sales Grow

Findings from the 2010 Organic Trade Assocation Organic Industry Survey have found that despite a down economy, sales of organic goods rose during 2009.

Organic fruits and vegetables, which make up 38% of all organic food sales, saw the largest increase, up 11.4% over 2008. Organic produce sales reached almost $9.5 billion in 2009.

The survey also found that 54% of the organic food is being sold through mainstream grocers and club stores, followed by natural food stores at 38%. Farm markets and CSAs also gained steam in 2009 as consumers continued to embrace the buy local concept.

I know that a growing number of people are focusing more and more on their health, as they see family members and friends dying of cancer, which is mostly attributable to our diet patterns. finding quality organic produce which is not expensive is a real challenge. Owning a small grape farm in western NY, and also marketing a line of excellent nutritional products that are organic, I have been on a dietary regimen that recommends organic foods, and have found them hard to obtain at times. I am excited about hearing about more organic foods becoming available.
