E. Coli Outbreak Linked To Raw Clover Sprouts

Clover sprouts, which were deemed “the new vegetable” by the Produce For Better Health Foundation a couple of years ago, are at the forefront of a foodborne illness investigation. Raw clover sprouts eaten at Jimmy John’s restaurants are being linked to a recent E. coli outbreak.

According to information released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) yesterday, 12 people from five states have become ill. The people who have become sick are from Iowa, Missouri, Kansas, Arkansas and Wisconsin. Two people have been hospitalized.

FDA’s investigation is ongoing. Preliminary traceback information has indicated a common lot of clover seeds used to grow clover sprouts served at Jimmy John’s restaurant locations where ill persons consumed the food. According to the CDC, FDA and states conducted a traceback that identified two sprouting facilities. Both locations used the same lot of seed to grow clover sprouts served at these Jimmy John’s restaurants.

On Feb. 10, the seed supplier notified the sprouting facilities that received this lot of clover seed to cease using it.
