GMO Labeling Battle Moves To House Floor

The Safe and Accurate Food Labeling Act of 2015 was passed by the Agriculture Committee last week and will head to the House floor, according to an article on TheHill.com.

The bill to impose voluntary labeling standards on foods made with genetically engineered ingredients, blocking mandatory rules, will “set the stage for a showdown with implications for consumers and the biotechnology industry,” the article states.

The bill, introduced by Rep. Mike Pompeo (R-KS) in March, is said to create a federal standard for the voluntary labeling of foods that contain genetically modified organisms (GMOs), and pre-empt states from enacting their own mandatory labeling laws.

“We took the positive feedback we received after our hearing in December and have been meeting with key stakeholders to ensure this is the right policy for both producers and consumers,” Pompeo said in a press release from his office. “Our goal for this legislation remains to provide clarity and transparency in food labeling, support innovation, and keep food affordable.”

I am against this bill. It eliminates the ‘ right to know’ for consumers. If consumers have the gmo info they will lead the market with their wallets.

Altered Genes, Twisted Truth: How the Venture to Genetically Engineer Our Food Has Subverted Science, Corrupted Government, and Systematically Deceived the Public 1st Edition

Hybridization and selective propagation ARE GENETIC ENGINEERING. They have been used to improve agricultural crops for centuries. Just because dramatic crop improvement has moved into a laboratory where the process can be targeted and made more efficient, does not make it evil or “not natural”. Many efforts to create improved hybrids fail because of various genetic incompatibilities. They were “not natural”. In short if an improved and viable plant is produced in the field or in the laboratory, IT IS NATURAL and should be freely used.

Good God, here we go again. The government caves into big chemical companies: e.g.: SYNGENTA, BAYER, BASE, DOW, MONSANTO & DuPont, do you really expect them to correct their errors, you have to be kidding me. It’s politics at its worst, BECAUSE the American consumer is the looser with poisoned food & don’t know it. As an Natural/Organic Farmer I have to label my products with everything including the color of my shorts. I believe the Feds should make them do the same. Thank you Vince

This is not a philosophical issue. It is a scientific issue. You are wrong. Dont impose your philosphical beliefs on the rest of us such as organic food production. All of our traditionally developed foods, plants, especially plants, have been genetically engineered by selection and hybridization for 10,000 years. GMO’s are just a faster way to develop new and better plants. GMO’s are thoroughly tested before being released into the food market. John Gyer’s comments are perfectly correct.

Better to allow use of a “Non GMO” label. Pretty much same sort of logic as using an “Organic” label.

Please reconsider your statement that “GMO’s are thoroughly tested before being released to the food market.” Really? Aside from that, what about the “terminator gene” they are playing with? What nightmare implications that has. That for me is a big no-no right there. This is NOT the same type of hybridization that has occurred naturally.
