International Report Confirms 2014 As Earth’s Warmest Year On Record

According to key findings in the recently released State of the Climate in 2014 report, last year was definitely a hot one — actually, the hottest ever recorded.

The report, compiled by NOAA’s Center for Weather and Climate at the National Centers for Environmental Information is based on contributions from 413 scientists from 58 countries around the world. It provides a detailed update on global climate indicators, notable weather events, and other data collected by environmental monitoring stations and instruments located on land, water, ice, and in space.

The report’s climate indicators show patterns, changes and trends of the global climate system. Examples of the indicators include various types of greenhouse gases; temperatures throughout the atmosphere, ocean, and land; cloud cover; sea level; ocean salinity; sea ice extent; and snow cover. The indicators often reflect many thousands of measurements from multiple independent datasets.

The comprehensive study backs up earlier data from NASA and NOAA stating the same.

Several key highlights from the report include:

  • Greenhouse gases continued to climb: Atmospheric CO2 concentrations increased by 1.9 ppm in 2014, reaching a global average of 397.2 ppm for the year. This compares with a global average of 354.0 in 1990.
  • Record temperatures observed near the Earth’s surface: Four independent global datasets showed that 2014 was the warmest year on record. The warmth was widespread across land areas. Europe experienced its warmest year on record, with more than 20 countries exceeding their previous records. Africa had above-average temperatures across most of the continent throughout 2014, Australia saw its third warmest year on record, Mexico had its warmest year on record, and Argentina and Uruguay each had their second warmest year on record.
  • Tropical Pacific Ocean moves toward El Niño–Southern Oscillation conditions: The El Niño–Southern Oscillation was in a neutral state during 2014, although it was on the cool side of neutral at the beginning of the year and approached warm El Niño conditions by the end of the year. This pattern played a major role in several regional climate outcomes.
  • Sea surface temperatures were record high: The globally averaged sea surface temperature was the highest on record. The warmth was particularly notable in the North Pacific Ocean, where temperatures are in part likely driven by a transition of the Pacific decadal oscillation – a recurring pattern of ocean-atmosphere climate variability centered in the region.
  • Tropical cyclones above average overall: There were 91 tropical cyclones in 2014, well above the 1981 to 2010 average of 82 storms. The 22 named storms in the Eastern/Central Pacific were the most to occur in the basin since 1992. Similar to 2013, the North Atlantic season was quieter than most years of the last two decades with respect to the number of storms.

Their methodology is always in question as they invariably have to adjust temperature readings for some sort of variable, thing is its always up. With more urban heat islands (cities spreading) and aging stations that absorb more heat from sunlight you would think the adjustments should be down. Carbon dioxide has a logarithmic increase of blocking/absorbing Infrared radiation, such that it blocks it all at relatively low levels (less than 100ppm) at the narrow bandwidths it has the activity. More of it has little effect except to help plants grow better with less nutrients. Methane’s IR bandwidths overlap water vapor which is much higher in concentration, so more methane does nothing. So it’s Ok for cows to fart. Some have been caught fudging data several times to make it fit their climate models. Unfortunately I think climate science is more about continuing grant money and is in reality political science.

Logic is futile keithsrv. Patrick Moore, co-founder of Greenpeace says the warming alarmists are nuts. The polar ice caps growth is currently above average. Polar bears are encountering above average sea ice in Canadian waters. It goes on and on. If the numbers don’t fit…….change the numbers. Make adjustments. One time I had lunch with a nice guy who told me the earth was 6000 years old. I told him that it’s much older. He became visibly agitated. I asked how he came to 6000 years and he told me it was done by a close analysis of the Bible. Most of the people I’ve met or have read have not had any collage science courses. No quantitative analysis, no physics, no advanced math, and no understanding that discussions about climate should be constrained to arguments between scientists (as they should be) and not be amongst the general public. Logic is futile, global warming has become a religion.

There is another side and argument that is not being listened to. But why? Why wouldn’t you hear instead of label and ridcule it? Deniers? Flat Earthers? MONEY? Angendas? Here is a great site for a different opinion: weatherbell.com

Thanks JCM. Nice site. As a kid, in Miami during the 50’s, we didn’t have much in hurricane warnings. We had a bunch of hurricanes. Hurricane prep in those days consisted of making certain our propane tanks were full (for stove and refrigerator), a gallon of white gas for the Coleman lantern, water in the bath tub, a carton of Pall Mall’s for Mom and a carton of Camel’s for my uncle, and a fifth of bourbon. That was pretty much it. Stuff happened and you dealt with it.
