IR-4 Announces Pest Management Solutions Workshop

The IR-4 Project, a resource that supplies pest management tools for specialty crop growers and provides data on EPA tolerances and labeled product uses, has recently announced the first “Global Minor Use Priority Setting Workshop” to be held Sept. 20-22, in Chicago, IL.

This workshop will identify minor use issues facilitate partnerships for data generation, and promote data and information sharing—all of which are critical to addressing pest management needs for minor uses on specialty crops.

Program Overview

  • The plenary session will include topics such as:
  • Updates since the second Global Minor Use Summit
  • Grower comments and perspectives
  • Share how existing programs/workshops have assisted with their needs
  • How European Union grower groups and European Union member states come together to address needs
  • Minor Use experiences in Brazil
  • Regulatory Experiences, what would be an ideal regulatory package
  • Regulator perspectives
  • Registrant experiences
  • Crop Life International case study

Selecting Priorities Program                 

  • Share outcome of survey and the new Minor Use Database for data needs and data sharing.
  • Propose and discuss further steps to establish and maintain common data sets and data exchange.
  • Discuss and set priorities
  • Issues to consider: solution may be registered in one part of the world already, IPM factors, resistance management, multiple GAPs, agronomic approach, import MRLs.
  • Build confidence in global cooperative research.
  • Gather ideas on how to do data development research (Good Laboratory Practices (GLP) and funding) for both residue and performance studies.
  • Review process to date (as a pilot for collating information)
  • Select pilot projects to go forward
  • Select project leads. (Coordinator, study director etc.) and project timelines
  • Get agreements with registrants and regulatory agencies at the workshop
  • Anticipated attendees: crop experts, growers, regulators, researchers and crop protection Industry.
  • IR-4 Annual Food Use and Biopesticide Workshop to follow (Sept. 22-24).

The workshop will be chaired by Dr. Jerry Baron, IR-4 Executive Director and Mr. Craig Hunter, Ontario Fruit and Vegetable Growers Association. The Global Minor Use Data Sharing and Global Minor Use Steering committees, organizing this meeting, consist of more than 50 members from 20 countries and organizations.
