Are Cyclospora Concerns Affecting Consumer Demand for Fresh Produce?

Consumer concerns over Cyclospora are influencing grocery purchasing decisions, according to new research from Chicory, with more shoppers choosing frozen and canned foods over fresh produce as they seek lower-risk options. According to a recent report from P2PI (Path to Purchase Institute), this shift reflects how food safety events can quickly alter purchasing behavior and reshape demand across the produce supply chain.

For CEA growers, the trend highlights an important reality: food safety, product traceability, and consumer trust are becoming just as important as yield and quality. While the current outbreak has not been linked broadly to greenhouse-grown produce, heightened consumer awareness means all fresh produce suppliers have an opportunity to reinforce confidence through strong food safety practices and transparent communication.

Chicory’s Consumer Survey Results

A survey of 1,044 U.S. consumers found widespread awareness of the recent food safety outbreak, with more than 90% familiar with it and nearly 57% following it closely.

This heightened awareness is influencing shopping habits, with more than 60% of respondents saying they have changed their grocery purchases, while another 17% are considering doing so. Fresh produce has been particularly affected, with 52% buying fewer bagged salad kits and 44% purchasing less loose lettuce or leafy greens.

Consumers also reported reducing purchases of fresh berries, herbs, and other produce. Many are replacing fresh items with products they perceive as safer, including frozen fruits and vegetables (32%), canned produce (29%), and shelf-stable options (17%).

For greenhouse and indoor growers, this presents an opportunity to differentiate their operations by emphasizing controlled production environments, water quality management, sanitation protocols, third-party food safety certifications, and full product traceability.
