Northwest Region Potato Stocks Hit 87.2 Million Hundredweight

Potato stocks in Idaho on April 1, 2015 totaled 50.0 million cwt., according to a USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) press release. Disappearance of the Idaho crop to date was 85.9 million cwt.

At the beginning of this month, potato stocks in Oregon totaled 8.20 million cwt. Disappearance to date was 14.4 million cwt. In Washington, potato stocks totaled 29.0 million cwt., and the disappearance to date totaled 72.5 million cwt.

Nationally, the 13 major potato states (California, Colorado, Idaho, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, New York, North Dakota, Oregon, Washington, and Wisconsin) held 130 million cwt of potatoes in storage. Potatoes in storage accounted for 32% of the 2014 fall storage states’ production. Potato disappearance totaled 272 million cwt.

Season-to-date shrink and loss totaled 22.1 million cwt. Processors in Idaho and Malheur County, Oregon used 55.7 million cwt of potatoes for the season, up 4% from April 2014.

In Washington and other Oregon counties, processors used 57.3 million cwt of potatoes for the season, down 3% from last year. Processors in the 9 major states used 144 million cwt of potatoes for the season, up 3% from April 2014.
