Which Employment Benefits Do Vegetable Growers Offer?

The 2022 State of the Vegetable Industry Survey is underway. And we’re beginning to see interesting trends in the results.

Take a new question we asked this year. For the first time, we asked vegetable growers what types of benefits they offer their employees. We listed a common list of benefits, from health insurance to retirement accounts like a 401K to housing. We then separated out the types of employees — full-time and part-time year round and full-time and part-time seasonal.

It’s early days yet (the survey is open through April 15), but we’re already seeing which benefits are most common. Naturally, the main group receiving benefits are year-round, full-time employees.

Fewer than 10% of operations offer seasonal and part-time workers benefits, save for housing and transportation for full-time seasonal workers. About a fifth provide housing, with transportation a close second.

Take a look the top benefits offered to full-time, year-round vegetable workers. (Keep in mind, only 330 have responded so far, so these numbers will change by the time we close the survey.)
