Sour Forecast For 2014-2015 Florida Orange Crop

Economic experts aren’t predicting a sunny outlook for Florida citrus next season. Elizabeth Steger of Orlando-based Citrus Consulting International kicked off the 2014-2015 Florida citrus season crop guessing game with her estimate of 89 million boxes. The figure — if it comes to fruition — would be the smallest Florida orange crop since the 1964-1965 season, which tallied at tad more than 82 million boxes.

Steger’s long-range outlook for last season came in at 130 million boxes, which was quite a ways off from the final total of 104 million boxes.

Shortly following Steger’s 2014-2015 estimate, finance and investment firm Louis Dreyfus Citrus Inc. released its own, coming in slightly higher at 96.6 million boxes.

USDA is scheduled to release its initial 2014-2015 Florida citrus crop projection Oct. 10.
