European Grapevine Moth Found In Sonoma County, CA

The Sonoma County Agricultural Commissioner, in cooperation with the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA), announced Thursday the detection of a single male European Grapevine Moth (EGVM, Lobesia botrana) in the western portion of Sonoma County, near Cazadero. The moth was found on June 26th in a trap from a vineyard.

In response to the detection, agricultural officials immediately deployed delimitation traps at the rate of 100 traps per square mile. A visual survey for EGVM eggs and larvae has been conducted and the results are negative. The grower has been contacted.

A single detection does not trigger a quarantine; however, if additional EGVM are detected within 3 miles of the original detection, a quarantine will be declared around the finds. This area of Sonoma County has had no previous EGVM detections. The closest previous detections of EGVM were over 20 miles away. Agricultural officials are investigating this isolated EGVM detection.
