By all accounts, the 41st edition of the International Agricultural and Gardening Machinery Exhibition (EIMA), held in Bologna, Italy from Nov. 12-15, was a huge success. There was a record number of visitors to this year’s exhibition, totaling 235,614, and accounting for a 20% increase from 2012’s attendance.
Attendees came from 124 countries and 1,800 manufacturing companies were present — 650 of which were from abroad. During a press conference on Tuesday Nov. 11 to jump-start the event, president of the Italian Farm Machinery Manufacturer’s Association, (FederUNACOMA), Massimo Goldoni, presented data on the international farm machinery market, and noted that in the first three months of 2014 alone, the U.S. increased its imports of Italian machinery by 23.6% despite the fact that the domestic market has hit a record low.
Numerous innovations in the specialty crop category were introduced, including a new automatic potato planter from Spedo. Called the “Baby,” this machine is suitable for planting potatoes and other tubers. It has an innovative cup feature that collects and transports the tubers from the container to the soil, increasing the accuracy of the machine. Also, MaterMacc showcased its MS 8250 Twin Seeder with 8 rows, and was presented as an honorable mention in the technical innovation contest.
