In their latest insect report, David Biddinger and Grzegorz Krawczyk, tree fruit entomologists discuss the timing of pest control applications following petal fall. They cover control options for Codling moth, tufted apple bud moth, brown marmorated stink bug, scale insects, and mites.

In an additional report, Biddinger and Krawczyk also discuss a rare finding of green fruitworm.

“Green fruitworm is actually a complex of several species of moths that are quite common on many shade and ornamental trees, but can be a serious pest of apples and pears in Michigan, New York and New England. In Pennsylvania it is generally only a sporadic minor pest that may flare up every decade or so,” they write.

In the report Biddinger and Krawczyk say most years injury at harvest from green fruitworm may reach 10% in New York and very little in Pennsylvania. This year, however, they note pest numbers are quite high.
