Online Farmers’ Market Kicks Off

Farmers’ markets may be a big part of the San Francisco Bay Area food scene these days, but they have their drawbacks. Many consumers who want to buy directly from farmers just don’t have the time to shop at individual markets. And farmers say setting up stands at the various area markets can be impractical.

Benzi Ronen said his new online marketplace, Farmigo, will solve both problems. According to a report in the San Francisco Chronicle, starting Tuesday in the Bay Area and New York, groups of consumers can sign up to connect to local farmers via weekly deliveries. Each delivery — to a workplace or community center — incorporates the consumers’ choice of produce, meats, and dairy products from several different farms or producers.

Ronen got the idea while conducting market research that showed 20% of the population would shop at farmers’ markets weekly if they were more convenient.

“If we could bring that farmers’ (market) experience — you pick which farm you want to buy from, what you want each week, you pay weekly — if we could bring that experience to you in a convenient way, that opens up the market,” he said.
