Michael Silacci is the first solo winemaker in the history of Opus One, the famous Bordeaux-style blend made in Napa, and since 2004 has been solely in charge of winemaking and the vineyards.

Opus One, founded in 1979, is the groundbreaking creation of Robert Mondavi of California and Baron Philippe de Rothschild of France, who produced Château Mouton Rothschild of Bordeaux. Their goal was to make one great wine, and by most accounts, they succeeded.

Other speakers at ASEV’s National Conference, an annual gathering for the latest research and technical information shaping the wine and grape industry, include:

• Merit Award Presentation by Dr. Timothy Martinson, Cornell University: “An Insect Ecologist’s ‘Random Walk’ through the Viticultural Landscape”
