How To Prevent Powdery And Downy Mildew In Young Grape Clusters

Growing conditions are favorable for downy and powdery mildew pathogens following recent rains in the Midwest. Young fruit clusters are susceptible to major diseases, especially downy and powdery mildews. Michigan State University researchers caution growers to be wary of infections, noting that it is possible to have a powdery mildew infection prior to observation of foliar infections. Prevention and protection of the early fruitset is essential.

MSU Extension recommends that growers protect the flower and fruit clusters by using effective fungicides. The risk for infection is higher with multiple rainstorms and temperatures ranging from 70 to 85 degrees Fahrenheit. As the fruit matures, it develops a natural resistance to downy and powdery mildew.
