Easy Access To Fertilization Guidelines

The California Department of Food and Agriculture’s Fertilizer Research and Education Program, in a joint project with UC-Davis, has synthesized years of research to create an online database that includes crop fertilization guidelines for California’s major crops.

New brochures are debuting this year, which will summarize nitrogen fertilization guidelines for California crops, including almonds and walnuts. Other crops will follow.

The brochures highlight nitrogen fertilization needs for each of the major annual stages, including bloom in the spring, fruit development in the summer and postharvest in the fall. Guidelines for fertilization of young trees are also available, as are guidelines for other nutrients, such as phosphorus and potassium.

Growers can find application timing and rate information, as well as guidance on uptake, leaf analyses and fertilizer types, within the brochures as well. Additional links will direct growers to supporting data and references.
