Upcoming Spring Walnut Meeting

Many walnut growers suffered various degrees of freeze damage last month, an unfortunate “fact of life” of growing walnuts in Lake County, CA. Given the increase in the value of walnuts, particularly for Chandler and other “newer” cultivars, it might be worth investing in some type of frost protection, depending on one’s individual planting situation.

Nearly 50 growers and others attended a 2013 Spring Grafting and Field Meeting at the Suchan Nursery and Orchards on April 26. This excellent turnout demonstrates great local interest in walnut growing as well as acknowledgement of host Alex Suchan’s deep expertise.

Another Spring Field Meeting will be held on Friday, May 31, in Kelseyville. Attendees will view a trial consisting of several pruning treatments, and the effect of frost damage on regrowth. They will also discuss crown gall and walnut husk fly management and other relevant topics of the season. University of California Extension specialist Bruce Lampinen will join the group at the Hanson Ranch on Merritt Road.

A more detailed agenda will be provided at a later date. In the meantime, for more information, contact Rachel Elkins, Pomology Farm Advisor, Lake & Mendocino Counties, at 707-263-6838 or [email protected].
