Update On Spanish Almond Imports And Exports

Last January, the Spanish province of Almeria exported almost 328,000 kilos of almonds, which is 39% more than in January 2012. Regarding the value of these sales, it reached 1.6 million Euro; 67.2% more, because prices were better than last year, as highlighted by the delegate of the Andalusian Council of Agriculture, Fisheries and Environment, José Manuel Ortiz.

Almonds accounted for 0.5% of the province’s sales abroad. Overall, Almeria is Spain’s fifth province in terms of value of exports of almonds and hazelnuts, with a 6.4% share, surpassed only by Tarragona, Alicante, Albacete, and Murcia. By countries, Germany remains the main destination for Almeria’s almonds, with a 46.8% share, followed by Italy (with 45.7%) and France (with 7.4%), according to the latest Icex report.

As for imports, in January Almeria purchased almonds valued at 108,400 Euro, which is 85.6% less that in January 2012. This means that the balance of trade in the almond market is favorable for Almeria, with 1.5 million Euro in profit. The U.S. was the province’s main almond provider, with 78.6% of the total, while the rest (21.4%) was imported from Portugal.
