Despite May Freeze, Michigan Asparagus Still OK

Freezes in May did cause some mature market-worthy stalks to be dark and rubbery, flopping toward the ground, but Michigan asparagus growers in the Lower Peninsula still say the season is not lost.

“I think we could have a pretty decent crop, still,” Ryan Walsworth told the Michigan Farm Bureau. “Asparagus is pretty resilient. We’ve had a lot of rain, so there’s plenty of water there, so if we get some heat we’ll still have a good crop — maybe not the great crop we could’ve had without this freeze — but I think we still have a chance at a pretty decent crop.”

With the 2013 season still in the early stages, Walsworth foresees picking to continue in to late June, thanks, in part to warmer temperatures and the late start most growers had with planting.
