Iceberg Lettuce Prices Up In California’s Abnormal Weather Conditions

As Salinas, CA, continues to have warm days and nights and high levels of humidity, yields of some leafy vegetable crops have fallen recently, according to the Farmer’s Report Market Trends for August 21 from U.S. Foods.

For iceberg lettuce, in particular, price is slightly up, supply is tight, and the warm temperatures are diminishing the quality of the lettuce. According to the Farmer’s Report, there have been additional reports of “misshapen and spongy heads along with seeders, fringe burn, and weak tip due to heat and humidity.”

The market is expected to remain light and possibly even tighter as quality comes into play. The quality is said to be poor and similar to what you would expect in the fall.
