Crookham Company is releasing two new onions to the Georgia Vidalia market this year, ‘Augusta’ (4022) and ‘Athens’ (4021). Each variety matures at the beginning of Vidalia harvest, giving growers another choice for the early slot in the market. Both ‘Augusta’ and ‘Athens’ have good emergence, disease tolerance and perform well under stressful conditions.

The Crookham development team reports that both varieties are competitive in yield and tend to have a higher stress tolerance to unfavorable weather due to their plant structure, sturdy root system, tight necks and a waxy finish on their leaves that tolerates pivot irrigation. Athens (4021) is characterized by a deeper bulb shape that can deliver a higher yield, with the same input usage, and create a better return for the grower. It has a good tolerance to bolting and a vigorous root system and healthy dark waxy foliage which tolerates pivot irrigation well, making it a grower friendly early choice.
