FDA and CDC have announced red onions are the likely root of a multi-state Salmonella outbreak. When the agencies first announced the outbreak in mid July, health officials were unable to identify the cause.

Over the weekend, a Bakersfield, CA-based grower/packer/shipper issued a recall. Investigators believe Thomson International Inc., is the likely source for the outbreaks. The recalls include all bulb onion types — red, yellow, white, and sweet yellow — shipped between May 1, 2020, and today.

The onions shipped to all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and Canada.

The recalled onions came in a variety of package sizes. Here are the brand names involved: Thomson Premium, TLC Thomson International, Tender Loving Care, El Competitor, Hartley’s Best, Onions 52, Majestic, Imperial Fresh, Kroger, Utah Onions and Food Lion.

The Outbreak’s Impact

At this time, 34 states report 396 cases collectively, with 59 hospitalizations.
