Researchers Ready To Testify Before Congress About GMOs

Two UF/IFAS graduate students have been tasked to advise a congressional committee as lawmakers question them about biotechnology and genetically modified organisms (GMOs).

Chris Barbey and Alejandra Abril Guevara, doctoral students in plant molecular and cellular biology, will head to Washington, DC, with UF/IFAS horticultural sciences Professor Kevin Folta to answer questions from the U.S. House Science Committee at a hearing scheduled for June 25.

Folta said there is no set agenda for the discussions, but he expects the researchers to field many questions relating to the GMO regulatory processes, food labeling, and product safety. “It is great that this committee is consulting with scientists that understand the evidence, and hopefully evidence will help them devise new policy,” Folta said.

Barbey hopes to provide clarification about some of the prevalent myths. “The safety of GMOs has been established and confirmed again and again. However, there is still substantial distance between the scientific facts and public perception,” he said.

Barbey said they are visiting to discuss the scientific strengths and limitations of the technologies and suggest new thinking, given the safety track record of GMOs.

“This is about discussing the science-based strengths and limitations of this technology,” Folta said. “I’m grateful that our students will have a chance to present the current state of the science.”

Let’s see what they have to say before we express an opinion.

Just because they are bringing in scientists that have extensive research based knowledge of the subject matter does not mean that they will be heard. GMO’s has become a political hot button and people — especially political leaders, tend to ignore the facts, go with their preconceived ideas or with the group that is putting the most pressure on them, i. e. environmental groups, big businessess that have a stake, etc. Follow the money and you can predict what the outcome will be. Just like global warming — unbelievable power and money making possibilities.

Good for them. And good luck with Congressional Neanderthalss. We can at least hope

This is like letting the fox watch the henhouse, it’ll be all show & no go. Why do you think they do not want to show what chemicals was used to raise, crops, beef & poultry? VERMONT the only state in the Union where GMO’S must be on the label. Vermont is being sued by them for having to correct labels, WHY WOULD THEY DO THAT IF THESE CHGEMUICALS ARE SAFE? This will be run by the 6 devils from hell; SYGENTA, BAYER, BASE, DOW, MONSANTO & DuPont. They control 76.1% of all private R&D. They control 60% of Commercial Seeds & 76.1% of al Agrochemicals.
Thank you – Vince

Why would they sue because they are forced to make a new label and only one state in the union requires this? Probably because the cost will be prohibitive for only one state and since they ship to many states it means a special label for only one state or stop selling into that state. If all the other states see no issue it sounds like there is pandering going on alright but to just a few extremely loud squeaky wheels in that state. I am sure when immunization were introduced there were some folks screaming how they would kill us all (wait! isn’t that still going on?) but the rest of us recognize they have saved billions of people and dollars.
