Here are just a few of the trials in the works for the summer of 2022:

Bejo

  • Dates: August 22 through 25, Geneva, NY

Gowan evaluates 1,300 trails, representing 16,000 varieties. Here are the varieties it’s deeming are the superstars:

Tomatoes

    • ‘Rambler’ A determinate, round, red variety that’s performed well in both the Southeast and Northeast. It’s a second early variety with a strong vine and TSWV resistant.
    • ‘Thunderbird’ A new ‘Hot Set’ variety that performing well during very difficult high temperature harvests. Ideal for Florida to 38° latitude.

Sweet Corn

    • ‘Bolt’ This bi color sh2 has set the sweet corn world on fire this year. It has a very tender pericarp with excellent flavor, a long shelf life, and comes in about three to for days ahead of ‘Kickoff’ and has excellent cold vigor.
    • ‘Redemption’ This dual purpose variety works well for both the shipper and roadside markets. It can handle higher populations while retaining ear size and husk cover. The recommended density is 27,000 to 32,000 per acre. It’s root system helps it stand strong through wet and drought conditions and in high winds.
    • ‘Salute’ This shipper variety has just enough toughness to the pericarp for tray packing while still maintaining tenderness for good eating quality.
    • ‘Courage MXR’ A superior full season corn ideal for the Southeast because it can handle the stress of fall and winter plantings.

Pepper

    • ‘Regulator’ This green/red blocky bell is the full package. An excellent disease package, adaptive to both northern and southern climates, and a strong plant with uniform classic bell-shaped pods.
    • ‘Catarino’ may be the largest jumbo jalapeño on the market. And it packs a punch with a high Scoville rating. It’s a strong plant that’s adaptable to all growing regions.
    • ‘Golden Max’ A hot banana/Hungarian pepper, this new variety will replace Gowan’s ‘Blazing Banana’ in the near future. It has stronger disease resistance to TSWV and is a better pepper while having similar maturity.

Cucumber

    • ‘WS-7584’ An American slicer, gynoecious, this variety is so good, Gowan brought it commercial introduction before it was named. It’s early maturing, virus resistant, predominantly female plant type that is a work horse. It produces early and continue for multiple harvests.
    • ‘Avenger’ This pickle/gherkin is resistant to multiple viruses and continues to stand out in trials.

HM.Clause

HM.Clause invested into quality virtual tours (dubbed HM.Clause Field Days) from its trials around the world, including Woodland, CA. It has videos on each of its crops, conveniently organized on it’s HMClauseFieldDays.com site.

Rupp Seeds

Rupp Seeds will be in both California and Hall, NY. It will be showcasing its pumpkins, squash, and gourds to dealers and potential dealers.
