Backyard Farms in Madison, ME, was hit with a whitefly infestation which led to the grower’s decision last month to remove a half million tomato plants, according to an article in the Bangor Daily News.

John Mahon, a professor of business at the University of Maine, told the newspaper that long-term, the economic consequences of removing the affected plants shouldn’t be too severe.

A spokesperson for Backyard Farms said that because of the infestation and having to replant, tomatoes will not be available until late October. The greenhouse operation typically grows 27 million pounds of tomatoes a year.
