Why the Vegetable Industry Will GROW STRONGER Together

I’ve always admired how resilient vegetable growers are. Every farm I visit is working out solutions to whatever issue they’re facing. I’ve seen home-grown broccoli auto harvesters and trials that test cost savings for different irrigation methods.

American Vegetable Grower’s GROW STRONGER initiative brings you positive stories from progressive growers filled with innovative solutions to help you grow a stronger future.

The challenges the industry faces today are mostly on the management side. Which market shows the most promise? Are there labor-saving techniques that will work for your operation? How can you know it’s time to pull the trigger on a new capital investment?

Then there’s the American vegetable industry as a whole. What can be done to ensure U.S. vegetable farms can compete here in the U.S. and abroad?

For that answer, I suggest you look to yourself and your peers. Together, you can find surprising, practical, and effective answers. And we aim to help you.

What is GROW STRONGER?

We at American Vegetable Grower are launching the GROW STRONGER initiative to connect growers to one another so you can share ideas and find practical tips to not only make it through these times, but to thrive and build a farm that will last through the generations.

This year, we’re committing to an array of projects to reach that goal:

  • High-profile cover story series. We are seeking out progressive growers who can share practical ideas on how they’re improving their operation. Each month’s cover story features an innovative grower sharing a successful concept. We will go more in-depth into the operation’s good ideas and lessons learned in an online feature.
  • Research: The Vegetable Industry and COVID-19. This is a unique, large-scale study, undertaken with advice from highly regarded researchers from several universities. You’ll find the highlights from the first part of the study, a survey, in this issue. Watch for part two later this year, where we will share the results of one-on-one interviews.
  • Virtual panel discussions. We will gather growers with great ideas in video chats throughout the year. You’ll get to not only hear these growers discuss what they’re doing but participate yourself.
  • Fresh Approach to the Grower Achievement Award Program. In 2021, we’re expanding our Grower Achievement Award program. We’ll now celebrate a grower from three different regions — West, Central, and East — with a national winner selected from one of the three regional winners.

Join us as we explore exciting ideas that are making the industry stronger!

Oh, One More Thing

We conducted an ambitious survey on how the industry is faring through the pandemic.

We organized our survey by which customer groups you sell to. Most of you sell to more than one sector. So we asked what percentage of your crops were dedicated to each group.

Here’s what you had to say:
